Neonicotinoids and Water - 2nd day of ECJ Hearing Anniversary
BeeLife, along with a vast number of other NGO's, keep working towards a ban on dangerous neonicotinoids. And today, on the second day of the European Court of Justice Hearing on Neonicotinoids Anniversary (15-16 February 2017), we bring facts to the table.
The worrying data supporting the dangers of neonicotinoids is not only vast but diverse. Which is why on this occasion, BeeLife re-releases its publication produced along with the FFAP 'NEONICOTINOIDS and WATER, Nature drowned by Pesticides' publication. Now available in English, French, Spanish and Italian, we encourage everyone to inform themselves and communicate on the confirmed risks neonicotinoids, and in particular Imidacloprid, pose to the environment through by contaminating our water.
Along with some shocking data, we highlight:
- Conventional water treatment plants in the United States do not significantly eliminate Imidacloprid neonicotinoid. Meaning that the harmful pesticide will continue to run its course. An estimate of 1000 to 3400 kg of Imidacloprid are released each year by these water treatment plants.
- Imidacloprid is in 2nd place of the highest concentrations of 50 active substances found in water in Bordeaux, France. As seen in the US, IMI is, in fact, refractory the purification treatment of water processing plants.
- Presence of Imidacloprid increases vastly in greenhouse surroundings. However, it is possible to reduce its presence as seen in the case of Netherlands, where greenhouse growers have invested in wastewater treatment plants.
